About Skipper Foundation

The Skipper Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering youth in South Africa, through the life-changing power of watersports (especially sailing). In a country where the youth unemployment rate is over 60%, we provide a pathway to success for children from vulnerable communities. Our mission is to open the world of sailing to these communities and provide a comprehensive program that fosters personal growth, education, and career opportunities. Our leadership team (including Rob Holden - an international water sport expert and two-time Olympic coach) ensures that our programs are delivered to international standards. Our Four Pillars of Impact on which our foundation is built: 1. Learn to Sail and Watersport: We use sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding as a vehicle to develop crucial skills like brain function, physical literacy, confidence, independence, and discipline. 2. Performance Sailing: For those who show commitment, we provide a pathway to regional, national, and even international competition. This pillar is not just about performance, but also about building perseverance and self-belief. 3. Feeding the Body and the Mind: We address the critical issue of food insecurity by providing nutritious meals to our students daily. We also support their academic journey with homework assistance, helping them improve their school prospects. 4. Equipping for the Future: We equip our youth with the skills needed to lift themselves out of poverty. Our training includes accredited certifications such as SA Sailing instructor courses, powerboat licenses, and first aid.
