About SKORPIoN
SKORPIoN is a pilot facility, jointly owned by Kaoko Green Energy Solutions (Pty) Ltd, Namibia and SeaH4 (Pty) Ltd, South Africa. The acronym stands for SeaH4/Kaoko Ocean Renewable Power Innovation Namibia. Kaoko is using to SKORPIoN to pilot the use of wave energy to produce green hydrogen, applying the proven technology from AW Energy and showcasing its technical and commercial performance along African shores, which provide consistent dense wave energy from the Southern Atlantic Ocean. SeaH4 is piloting in a sub-commercial application their technology to farm seaweed on non-arable desert land, its conversion into biogas and upgrading thereof into biomethane and biogenic CO2 for the production of green hydrogen-based e-fuels. Together, Kaoko and SeaH4 will pilot the conversion of GH2 and biogenic CO2 into e-methanol and its use in the commercial shipping sector, validating in a commercial setting the value chain of low carbon fuels, produced in Africa, for the shipping sector, from ‘well to wake’. SKORPIoN will further serve to evaluate and validate a range of synergies between coastal green hydrogen projects and large-scale seaweed farming for biomass production. The site comprises a total of 10ha of land and sea access. On the site, SKORPIoN will install the following components: • Offshore wave energy converter (WEC) • Desalination unit • Electrolyser • Aquafarm for cultivation of seaweed • Anaerobic digesters, for the seaweed • Gas upgrading unit for biogas • Power to X catalytic converter for hydrogenation of CO2 into e-methanol • Wind turbine(s) • Solar energy The plant will require a total investment of 25 EUR and offers a net profit, due to varied income streams.
