About Slavery North
Slavery North is an academic unit devoted to the study of Transatlantic Slavery in northern regions, with focused coverage on Canadian Slavery and slavery in the American North. Founded in 2022, Slavery North delves into the under-studied fields of art, visual cultures, and histories of Northern Transatlantic Slavery. Dr. Charmaine A. Nelson is the inaugural director of Slavery North which continues and expands the mandate of the Institute for the Study of Canadian Slavery, NSCAD University, which she founded in 2020. Dr. Nelson is currently Provost Professor in the History of Art and Architecture Department, UMass Amherst, where she has established the Slavery North Initiative.
