About Slutwalk Johannesburg
Slutwalk Johannesburg is part of the international Slutwalk movement that started in Canada in 2011 when a police officer told university students that if women didn’t want to be raped they should stop dressing like sluts. There are now Slutwalks in more than 100 cities spreading the message that nobody deserves to be raped. You don’t have to relate to the word slut to join or support the movement. Slutwalk is for everyone who stands against victim blaming. It is time to change the way we think about rape and sexual abuse. It is time to hold criminals accountable for their choices. It is time to support survivors. The main focus of the organisation is an annual protest march, held in September. Participation in the march has doubled every year for the last 3 years. We also have a team of public speakers who help raise awareness of gender politics. At a corporate level we discuss how to increase profitability by addressing the consequences of rape and sexual abuse and how creating a safer space for survivors in the workplace can improve productivity. We speak to parents about building relationships with their children to create the kind of bond where discussing sexual and emotional issues becomes a natural on going conversation rather than a once off, one sided "talk". We speak to the public in general about our personal experiences to challenge perceptions around rape culture and to break down the myths that hinder the healing of survivors. The Care Kits Collection project was launched in 2016. This involves collecting toiletries and handbags to put together the basic sanitary needs for people reporting rape and sexual abuse as well as people in need who are at greater risk of victimization such as homeless people and sex workers. We distribute the care kits to shelters, crisis centers, police stations, religious organisations etc. There is also a growing network of collection points where people can drop off donations.
