SmartSpot Quality is an ISO/IEC 17043:2010 accredited Proficiency Testing Scheme Provider which develops robust controls and services to confirm the quality of molecular diagnostic tests in laboratories (currently TB, HIV and COVID-19) SmartSpot and its employees are committed to “Enabling you to save lives and uplift communities” by ensuring that medical diagnostics (current and new) can be effectively validated, rolled out into the field, and Quality Controlled during standard operations, thereby giving confidence that the patients being diagnosed are receiving the appropriate diagnosis. SmartSpot Quality (Pty) Ltd is a South African grown company (launched in 2015) which owes its genesis to a research project started in 2010 by a team of Wits University scientists in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology (DMMH) and the Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB Research (CBTBR). Since 2010, the research program and now SmartSpot has shipped more than 85 000 controls to more than 50 countries around the world and has verified in excess of 54 500 GeneXpert modules. SmartSpot’s External Quality Assessment Program currently has 1250 instruments enrolled across 50 countries and has built manufacturing capacity to service up to 10 000 instruments 3x per year.
