About Smoke & Apple Films
Smoke & Apple Films is an independent production company co-founded by Katie Green and Carlye Rubin. Named for their respective cities, Smoke & Apple tells personal stories that shed light on social and political issues in need of a platform. As an all-female, award winning documentary filmmaking team, we have a particular interest in telling women's stories but are drawn to content that can be both powerful and spur action. Our directorial debut, "The (Dead Mothers) Club" (a film about three women who lost their mothers during adolescence and the long term impacts of that loss), was acquired by HBO in 2014 and won the audience award at Crossroads Film Festival. Our second feature, "The Family I Had" told the story of intra-family violence and juvenile incarceration through a mother's unwavering love for her son who killed her daughter. It was acquired by FilmRise and broadcast on Discovery I.D. after premiering at Tribeca Film Festival in April 2017, won the Special Jury Mention for Best Documentary at Raindance International Film Festival and The Gracie Award for Best Documentary in 2018. We are currently in the final stages of post-production on "1275 Days" about 4 teenage boys who were charged with Felony Murder after an unarmed botched home invasion. In addition to our feature film work, we have made short films for Intel, the BBC, Innocence Project, and Amazon Originals. Our work has been supported by Tribeca Film Institute, Camden Film Institute, Dogwoof and The Jerome Foundation. We want to collaborate!
