About Social Skills Australia
Social Skills Australia helps teens and young adults with social challenges to make and keep friends and learn important social skills through relaxed and fun small group sessions, both online and in person. We use the world-renowned Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) an evidence-based social skills treatment for children, adolescents and young adults with social challenges. PEERS® was developed by Dr Elizabeth Laugeson - an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behaviour. More than x30 peer-reviewed studies demonstrate the efficacy of this course - with teens consistently showing improvement on every measure of social skills and social engagement as well as reduced problem behaviours, related social difficulties and social anxiety. The gains are also maintained well after the treatment has ended - a finding attributed to parental involvement in the intervention. PEERS is delivered over 16 weeks of 90-minute sessions, covering topics such as: - developing and maintaining friendships - conversational skills - entering and exiting conversations - electronic communication - appropriate use of humour - organising get togethers - being a good sport - handling disagreements - changing a bad reputation - handling teasing and bullying. PEERS teaches social skills through didactic lessons and role-play demonstrations with students practicing these skills during group behaviour rehearsal activities. Parents attend separate sessions simultaneously and assist their teens in practicing what they learn each week (parent participation is required). As a Certified PEERS® Provider, Social Skills Australia is running small group sessions on the Sunshine Coast - both face-to-face and online and is currently taking enrolments for February 2023.
