About SOFDI | Sustainable Organic Farming and Development Initiatives

SOFDI is a Kenya-based NGO focused on empowering the poor and vulnerable farmers of Western Kenya with education and resources, so they can lead healthy, productive, and dignified lives. We focus on the multiple root causes of hunger, malnutrition, illness and adverse poverty. Improving Farming Skills We teach sustainable agriculture practices and help smallholder farmers improve their yields and diversify their crops; the first step to food security, self-sufficiency and an improved livelihood. Promoting Healthy Nutrition We train households on nutrition-sensitive agriculture, together with family and early childhood nutrition. An innovative approach to food security and a diverse and healthy diet. SOFDI's community seed banking model promotes food sovereignty by enabling farmers to save their own seeds, lower input costs, and improve biodiversity, strengthening local food systems and resilience. Securing Safe Water We secure clean and safe water sources through our spring protection program and comprehensive WASH trainings. Access to safe water is a fundamental human right and key to promoting good health and improving access to opportunities.
