About Solace for the Children
Solace for the Children is a 501(c)3 organization of volunteers building peace on a foundation of health. Solace establishes international partnerships to provide medical care, education and leadership development for the children of war-torn countries of the world. Currently we have active programs in Afghanistan and are laying the groundwork for serving the children of Syria and Iraq. To accomplish this, medical professionals, business and community leaders come together in Solace communities across the country as volunteers ready to receive these children, nurturing and caring for them through treatment, healing and community activities. Hosting these children is a life changing experience for Solace families in the U.S, yet the effects reach beyond. Through the course of the summer, friendships develop between Afghan children of differing ethnic backgrounds and social classes, Afghans and Americans, and local Christian and Muslim volunteers. Solace for the Children believes these relationships establish a foundation for building lasting peace. The Peace House Academy was established in the spring of 2013 in Kabul Afghanistan. Here Solace alumni have a safe place to live and learn in a new way. Today, we operate a 20 bed compound for boys and girls with grounds for playing and extended learning. An Afghan family lives on site and lovingly nurtures each Solace Scholar ages 7 through high school. Together with a small staff and dozens of volunteers, these children have become a special family with round the clock care and guidance. All children who have participated in a Solace medical program can apply. The education of some children can be supported within their home province and we support that effort in many ways. Yet, often we find children who lack any real educational opportunity at home. The Peace House Academy focuses primarily on these children from areas of Afghanistan where education is a far more difficult goal to achieve.
