Rasha, with her roots in old Damascus, and Elvira, who spent her formative years between old Baku and Istanbul, bring a deep appreciation for the stunning artistry of mosaics, textiles, pottery, ceramics, and more. Driven by nostalgia and love for their culture, they aim to bring the essence of Middle Eastern art to Canada. Our Name: The name Soumak embodies the Middle East and the Mediterranean in a simple yet meaningful way. It signifies both a type of tapestry and a spice used in Middle Eastern cuisine, evoking the warm and hospitable spirit of the region with its deep red color. Soumak captures the essence of this diverse culture with its rich artistic heritage, flavorful traditions, and welcoming atmosphere. Our Mission: Inspired by support groups formed for refugee women and adolescent girls in the aftermath of the Syrian war, Soumak Boutique empowers refugee and women artisans. These artisans create beautiful handmade products that tell their unique stories and reflect their rich cultural heritage. We are committed to promoting Middle Eastern culture, reviving its heritage, and educating people through our artwork.
