About South African Amapiano Awards
The Amapiano Awards were created to celebrate the genre’s rapid rise and increasing global influence. Amapiano, which emerged from South Africa’s townships, particularly in Gauteng, has become a significant cultural phenomenon, especially among the youth. Blending elements of house music, jazz, and kwaito, Amapiano’s infectious sound has transitioned from underground roots to mainstream popularity, marking its status as one of South Africa’s most remarkable musical exports. The inaugural awards launched in 2021 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, and were later broadcast on SABC 1. The event featured an impressive lineup of prominent Amapiano artists, including Kamo Mphela, Musa Keys, Pabi Cooper, Sir Trill, Lady Du, Reece Madlisa, Zuma, Mr JazziQ, and Busta 929, among others. Major League DJz and the late Riky Rick were among the winners, with heartfelt acceptance speeches shared on the night. The awards garnered remarkable viewership, attracting 3 million viewers on its first broadcast and an additional 1.5 million for the repeat airing, captivating audiences across South Africa and neighboring countries. Beyond its entertainment value, the Amapiano Awards have had a tangible socio-economic impact, creating over 300 employment opportunities for black youth in roles such as choreography, musical direction, ushering, creative art direction, and promotional activities. As Amapiano continues to captivate audiences locally and internationally, the awards stand as a testament to the genre’s evolution and a celebration of the creativity and innovation of the artists shaping this dynamic soundscape—cementing its place as “the heart of a global movement.”
