South Side Lumber INC. in Herrin is a third generation family owned business established in 1946. Claude Smith Sr. and Guy Smith started a company with a 1946 Dodge flatbed and two lots in downtown Herrin, Illinois. In 1951 Claude Smith Jr. and his wife Alice Smith took over control and began to expand to a full service lumber yard. They ran the business for the next 40 years. In 1989, their son Kent C. Smith came back from Baylor University with an MBA in business and took over the store. South Side Lumber now serves all of Southern Illinois, employs over 35 people and encompasses many buildings and areas of property. South Side Lumber now is truly a one-stop shop for building projects small or large. We have everything from blocks to lumber: drywall to blinds, cabinets to caulk. South Side's Knowledgeable, highly trained staff can assist you in all your building projects. Our Mission Our mission is to provide customers exceptional value building materials and closely related merchandise by understanding and responding locally to demands for products: providing knowledgeable, honest and prompt service, selling at a fair price and maintaining and a atmosphere characterized by safety, friendliness and respect.
