About South Tyneside Churches KEY Project
KEY was established in 1992 by South Tyneside Churches, after a local homeless young man died on the streets in winter. Our aim is to help young people who are vulnerable to homelessness, to lead independent and successful lives. The young people we work with are aged 16 -24, vulnerable, unemployed often with health and emotional problems. Many have come from unstable families and have previously led chaotic lifestyles. We offer a range of practical support to help them find and keep a home. We directly support and advise up to 200 young people each year. Our activities are delivered around 2 work steams: • Supporting independent living - floating support; emergency packs; supported accommodation. • Preventing homelessness - mediation; advice and guidance; peer education in schools. KEY only works in South Tyneside. It is an area of severe deprivation with relatively high numbers of young people at risk of homelessness. Locally there is a shortage of appropriate accommodation and support for young people. Consequently many end up in unsuitable bed and breakfast accommodation outside the area, away from their support networks. Current levels of housing need amongst young people are on the rise and KEY faces an increasing demand for its services.
