About Space of Her Own
Space of Her Own, Inc. (SOHO) is an award-winning 501c3 charitable organization committed to helping girls make good choices, live healthfully, communicate openly, progress academically and give back to others in order to lead fulfilling lives. Two programs for 5th graders operate from Alexandria, Virginia, each supporting 13 girls and one program operates from Arlington, Virginia supporting 11 girls. The SOHO Club provides activities and services to SOHO girls and their mentors throughout their middle school years, promoting long-term mentoring relationships and ongoing learning opportunities. These volunteers will provide fifth grade girls from under-resourced communities with social, emotional, academic and creative enrichment through mentorship and professionally-led arts and STEM instruction. SOHO seeks to create an environment in which girls feel free to express themselves, step outside of their comfort zone, and grow. By pairing mentors one-to-one with mentees we hope to create the foundation that can serve for a long-lasting bond and mentoring relationship. Mentors and mentees work together each week on an array of projects throughout the year designed to teach girls to value creativity using unique professionally-led arts and STEM instruction to create items that will be used to transform the sleeping space of each girl. At the end of the year, mentors work in pairs to use all the pieces that they've designed and built together with their mentees to give each girl a true Space of HER own.
