About Spare Spoons Advocacy

Spare Spoons was born out of a longing for a level of support unavailable to me as a member of the chronically ill/disabled community and a desire to fill that need for my fellow "spoonies". One of the biggest flaws that I see within the American healthcare system is the lack of guidance and support for those with non-acute conditions. If you have Strep, chances are you will go to the doctor when symptoms persist. You will quickly get an appointment, the appropriate medication, recover, and return to daily life. In contrast, when you have a chronic condition, providers don’t seem to know what to do with you or how to assist you properly. We are often misunderstood, pushed off, victims of medical abuse and malpractice, and quickly sent away to manage our care on our own. We are also expected to uphold our regular responsibilities because this isn’t a temporary condition and life must go on. Even if you have found your rhythm, there is a basis of upkeep and associated mental and physical drain that our healthy peers do not experience. I’m here to bridge that gap by advocating for your needs, helping you research and plan, and acting as a supportive guide in your health journey.
