About SpectraLux
SpectraLux LLC was established in Michigan in 2024, forming out of university research into near-range wireless optical communications. The company exists solely to facilitate the commercialization of this light-based line-of-sight communications technology, finding and pursuing promising new opportunities for deployment. Originally envisaged as a near-range data link for ad-hoc vehicle networks in transportation safety applications, this technology distinguishes itself from conventional Li-Fi systems in one crucial way: outdoor performance has been a consideration since day one. The problem of high ambient light from the sun “drowning out” the signal has effectively been solved, yielding a system that can successfully transmit data across distances of up to 700 feet in broad daylight using an ordinary automotive-grade high beam. Another key benefit to our solution: simplified integration into existing lighting infrastructure. In most cases, all it takes to transform a factory automotive LED luminaire or indicator into a transmitter is a small, low-cost daughter board with power, ground, and one or more signal connections. The number and variety of potential applications for this innovative outdoor-capable wireless optical link are growing every day, and while it does not aim to replace radio frequency technologies such as BLE and Wi-Fi outright, it can serve as a redundant or complementary data link, or a substitute in use cases requiring a high degree of security, discretion, and/or directionality; high resistance to jamming; and minimal RF signature.
