• SpeechKing is a nonprofit organization that provides free English resources to students around the globe. We have over 100 students and 30 volunteer teachers. • Our main target is students in developing regions. • We offer free one-on-one video lessons or conversation sessions with native English speakers. English is a global language that is used by native speakers of different languages to communicate with each other. The official language of 54 countries, this lingua franca is used every day throughout the world in the fields of academia, politics, and business. This means that students who can't speak English very well will fare poorly as adults. Therefore, students need to build a strong foundation for their English proficiency. However, there is one problem. Throughout schools across the most populous country, China, the educational resources for learning English for students vary dramatically. For example, most students in cities can communicate fluently in English while students in smaller towns have difficulty even pronouncing words. This disparity of English proficiency throughout China creates an unequal playing field for students in less-developed areas. Lacking the necessary skills to communicate effectively in English, they will be less successful in their adult lives due to its importance. Since 2017, we have been trying to fix this issue by helping all students in China improve their English. One way we do this is by providing one-on-one video calls that allow students to communicate directly with native English speakers. During the video call, our teachers will analyze a student's speaking skills with a developed rubric, and after, they will offer ways to improve. We offer many other resources in the resources tab of our webpage. While any student can utilize our free supplements, the core of our efforts prove students in underdeveloped areas the same opportunities offered to students in larger cities.
