Spotlight is a new joint venture established by the two companies with a total investment of 5.1 billion CNY and standard capacity of up to 160,000 vehicles per year. It will require around 3,000 employees after the ramp-up phase. In July 2018, witnessed by Chinese and German government leaders, the two shareholders signed the 50:50 joint venture agreement. The name "Spotlight" implies light, glory, cleanliness, energy and speed, and underlines the company’s vision to create a new model of development in the NEV industry. The JV was officially incorporated in late 2019. Zhangjiagang was chosen as the location of the Spotlight plant because of its solid supplier network, skilled workforce and good infrastructure. Jiangsu is also one of the leading provinces for finance, education and technology. Construction of the new factory will feature the concept of "intensive land use, smart manufacturing, energy saving and environmental protection" to build "world-class quality" products. The development of products, processes and plant construction will be carried forward simultaneously. By applying new technologies and a well-planned layout, the new plant will bring together advanced production concepts from both shareholders, cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and leading quality management systems. Upon completion, the plant will be able to set a new benchmark for the industry up to the global standard. This event marks another concrete step forward for the cooperation between the BMW Group and Great Wall Motor.
