About St. John's University LGBTQ+ Center
The LGBTQ+ Center at St. John's University was formed in 2021 due to the efforts and advocacy of faculty, alums, administrators, and staff. Candice D. Roberts, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Division of Mass Communication, and Shanté Paradigm Smalls, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Black Studies, and Faculty, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, who left St. John's in 2023, formed a small task force and began inviting undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administrators, and staff to collaborate on policies and projects to integrate LGBTQIA+ community members into University life fully. In the Spring of 2021, they proposed to Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President, and former Chief Diversity Officer Nada Llewellyn, Esq., the idea of a resourced and staffed LGBTQ+ center at St. John's University. Today, our LGBTQ+ Center is open to all St. John's University students, faculty, and staff members. University members often visit the center to socialize, check out our Banned Books Library, and seek resources for the LGBTQ+ community at St. John's, among other things. Our center also hosts approximately 8 to 10 events in a semester. Some of our signature events include our Lavender Graduation, which celebrates LGBTQ+ graduates and honors them with a Lavender cord, as well as our St. John's Pride Walk, in which LGBTQ+ members and allies at the University come together to walk the NYC annual pride in June. The LGBTQ+ Center is also consistently working on initiatives to enhance diversity, inclusivity, and campus safety for our LGBTQ+ University members. For instance, our center is currently working on Information Cards that students can easily access and highlight the wellbeing resources and student organizations around campus for LGBTQ+ students. So whether it's to join our team, collaborate on a project, learn about our resources, or say hello, please visit us at St. John's Hall 216 and be sure to follow us on Instagram @lgbtcenter.sju
