About St. Vincent de Paul Society of Fort Wayne
Our History: One of the largest charitable organizations in the world, the St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP) was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam in Paris, France. Frederic’s vision was to serve those in need with love and compassion through the person-to-person service of dedicated volunteers. The Fort Wayne District of the St. Vincent de Paul Society began in 1944 and today, consists of 23 chapters in convenient locations throughout the Greater Fort Wayne Region. The SVDP Thrift Store in central Fort Wayne, also known as the “Help Store,” opened in 1948 and has been providing free and low-cost items to people in the Fort Wayne community ever since. Our Mission: The mission of SVDP is to alleviate poverty by offering hope as well as help to all. SVDP serves ALL people in need and does not discriminate; it respects the dignity of each person. Over 90% of the clients served by SVDP are not Catholic and the organization is a separate entity from the church. With only 18 staff members and over 800 volunteers, overhead expenses are kept to a minimum to maximize the impact of donor funds.
