Das 2002 von der Gemeinnützigen Hertie-Stiftung in Hessen begonnene START-Schülerstipendienprogramm wird heute deutschlandweit angeboten. Seit 2007 führt die START-Stiftung gGmbH als Tochtergesellschaft der Hertie-Stiftung das Programm durch. Beteiligt sind außerdem über 120 Partner – Ministerien, Stiftungen, Kommunen, Unternehmen, Service Clubs und Vereine sowie Privatpersonen.
