STB INN is developing PERIsign, a new medical device that will revolutionize the assessment of patients with abdominal pain. 24 million people visit an Emergency Department (ED) in Europe and the US every year due to abdominal pain, representing up to 10% of all ED visits. PERIsign – the ED fast track. PERIsign utilizes sensors to detect involuntary guarding in the abdominal wall, which is the bodys response to a severe intra-abdominal event. Using advanced signal processing and dedicated software, the signals are presented for the ED physician, enabling rapid and accurate assessment of the patients need for in-hospital care. The result is direct, visible, objective, and user independent. Within minutes, the ED physician can determine if the patient requires further attention; such as X-ray investigations, admission, and advanced medical treatment. Alternatively, they can ascertain that the patient is safe to go home without undergoing further investigations. As a result, waiting times and overcrowding in the ED can be reduced and unnecessary additional exams and admissions can be avoided, allowing for better care and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
