Steadi Systems is a HealthTech startup founded by Dr. Ava Segal to build balance health awareness and provide creative, fun, and effective solutions that empower all adults to age with confidence. Her first invention, Steadiplay, is an engaging, evidence-based balance screening and training system that uses postural adjustments on an instrumented tilt board to control a wireless robot’s movements. This fun, intuitive, and customizable activity motivates participation while also targeting age-related balance decline. Connecting balance performance to robotic visual cues is a promising approach because it retrains reaction times and promotes body awareness, which are critical for fall prevention. Falls are the leading cause of injury in aging adults with related healthcare costing the United States $50 billion annually! Few people are aware that balance decline typically begins at age 50 and that a targeted balance training regimen can mitigate balance losses and prevent future falls. Committing to balance training is especially challenging if efficacy is unknown, performance feedback is sparse, and the training is not intuitive or engaging. Steadiplay directly addresses the problem that more affordable, engaging methods are needed to proactively maintain balance skills and effectively treat balance dysfunction. Steadiplay is in early-stage prototype development. We are excited for this next phase of rapid design iterations and user validation testing.
