About Steel Recycling Institute
The Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) is an industry association that promotes and sustains the recycling of all steel products. The SRI educates the solid waste industry, government, business and ultimately the consumer about the benefits of steel's infinite recycling cycle. Steel is America's most recycled material. More steel is recycled annually than paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass combined. This is because steel scrap is an essential raw material in making new steel. SRI works with recycling coordinators, scrap processors and steel companies to cultivate an infrastructure for recycling steel cans, cars, appliances and construction materials as well as emerging sources of steel scrap such as steel aerosol cans, used oil filters and other previously untapped sources of steel scrap. As a result, each year millions of tons of steel are collected through recycling programs to be consumed by steelmaking furnaces throughout America. This use of steel scrap to make new steel conserves energy, reduces emissions and conserves natural resources.
