rTMS Therapy Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive medical procedure used to treat certain mental health conditions, primarily depression. It involves the use of electromagnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain. During a rTMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp, typically over the forehead, and it generates magnetic pulses that can influence brain activity. How rTMS Works: rTMS works by generating magnetic pulses that induce small electrical currents in the targeted brain regions. These electrical currents can influence the brain's neural activity and help regulate mood and emotional responses. Procedure: rTMS is typically administered in an outpatient setting and does not require anesthesia. Each session can last around 20 to 40 minutes, and multiple sessions are usually required over a period of several weeks. Side effects are generally mild and might include headache or scalp discomfort. Efficacy: rTMS treatment has a high success rate that is backed by numerous scientific studies. In a study by Stanford University, remission was achieved in 79% of patients with severe depression using the new “Saint” method. Other studies show that a success rate of at least 68% can be achieved with classic rTMS therapies. In practice, even higher success rates are sometimes found. A large majority of patients achieve significant symptom relief. Safety: rTMS is safe. The procedure does not involve any anesthesia or seizures.
