About Stichting Neighborhood Feminists
Since 2019, we organize local, direct-impact community projects that make a tangible difference in individuals’ lives, working from a feminist, intersectional and anti-racist perspective and aiming for equity and representation for marginalized communities. As a non-profit primarily made up of volunteers, we work together toward sustainable, needs-based community change. Our current focus is period poverty. Through this issue, we address not only poverty, but also inequality and public health. Period poverty is defined as the inability to access the products or information needed for a healthy menstruation. We as a society need systemic solutions to poverty, but we as a non-profit focus on period poverty specifically because it is a matter of poverty, equity and public health which has direct effect on academic and professional performance, as well as an impact on social engagement. Our approach combines advocacy and direct action, with a view to providing needs-based support in the short term and sustainable solutions in the long-term. Our direct support to those in need occurs primarily through our Menstruation Stations, which are strategically placed self-serve cabinets filled with period products and now found across Amsterdam. Each month, about 4000 people meet their needs through our Stations. These Stations meet just some of the most immediate need in the city, where, as our own 2022 quantitative research has shown, 27% of those who menstruate had experienced period poverty within the previous 12 months. Any substantive change takes a village. We believe in strategic collaboration with both the public and private sector, as well as with like-minded civil service organizations and non-profit groups. Above all, none of this would be possible without the support of our volunteers and donors. Got a question or an idea? Check out our website or drop us a line!
