About Stomping Grounds Literary Arts Initiative
WHO WE ARE Stomping Grounds Literary Arts Initiative (SGLAI) immerses incarcerated and criminalized youth in the visual, literary, and musical arts, providing mentorship and production opportunities to help them become powerful authors of their experiences. Founded in 2021 by award-winning teaching artist Elgin Bokari Smith, SGLAI continues nearly a decade of professional-quality arts programming for youth in carceral facilities, now under the fiscal sponsorship of Resilience Partners. Through trauma-informed, consent-based, and youth-centered programs, SGLAI fosters resilience, self-determination, and practical skills that help youth heal, connect with creative communities, and advocate for equitable policies through their narratives. Our long-standing partnerships with legal, cultural, and grassroots organizations work to dismantle juvenile incarceration by centering youth voices and building welcoming communities across Chicago.
