An OTS (Operator Training Simulator) is composed of a dynamic process model that is integrated with a simulated control system. A well-designed training system will simulate the dynamic behavior of a process closely and provide trainees with a realistic training experience. This helps operators improve their operation and troubleshooting skills. The OTS provides an opportunity for management to evaluate and quantify operator competence in a controlled setting against an established performance standard. It enables operators to learn from mistakes without negative impacts to people, the environment and the plant. Most plants that do not use training simulators utilize mostly on-the-job training which doesn't always provide trainees with an opportunity to experience many of the most difficult scenarios. When a plant is running well, trainee operators can spend numerous shifts operating the plant without ever having to recover from an upset or perform startups and shutdowns. This means that trainees may never see and solve real problems firsthand until they encounter them in the plant which increases the likelihood of a suboptimal operator response. The use of the OTS is not just limited to trainee operators. Experienced operators can also benefit from using the simulator by practicing their response to various scenarios to maintain their familiarity with events that don’t happen very often which keeps their troubleshooting skills sharp.
