Some people say that bullying can never be eradicated, and in some ways there is a truth to this statement. However, that does not mean we should sit back and let it happen. Much like a garden that is left untended, where weeds will inevitably start to grow, bullying will naturally develop in a community where measures are not put in place to effectively deal with it. This means that to see a time when bullying is no longer an issue, we must remain vigilant and consistent. Our first plan is start up a training scheme for any young person who wishes to become the front line in defence against bullying. We will equip them with the skills to step in when an incident of bullying arises and mediate between the parties involved to resolve the situation. We understand that in some cases the situation may be too much, or too difficult for the young person to deal with alone. In these cases they will be able to refer these cases back to us and we will have a team ready to liaise with any parties involved with the aim of neutralising the situation: these adults will most likely be the people who have trained up the young defenders. We also plan to run training workshops for schools and community centres, giving the professionals who work with young people the tools to deal effectively with any bullying that may arise. Our final objective is to restore those involved with bullying to full strength. Bullying has effects that outlast the initial bullying incidents. Our plan is to run a recovery programme for both the bullied and the bully. We understand that the behaviour seen is just the tip of an iceberg that runs deep into the psyche of a young person involved with bullying, and to successfully tackle bullying we need to melt the iceberg, not just chop off that part which is visible.
