Stress has become a leading epidemic worldwide with 1 in 14 UK adults reporting feeling stressed every day and 74% feeling so stressed that they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope. Work-related stress is the most common cause of stress, with 79% of employed people reporting feeling stressed. Stressed individuals are more likely to experience ill health including but not limited to musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive ill health as well as disordered eating, anxiety and depression. As such stressed individuals are often physically and psychologically impaired in the workplace leading to huge financial impact. In fact, work-related stress is reported to cost up to £45 billion each year (Deloitte, 2020). This is an increase of almost £20 billion pounds over the past 15 years and can be explained by absence costing approximately £7 billion, staff turnover costing £9 billion and presenteeism costing approximately £27-29 billion. At Stress Ed. we believe that no individual should be prevented from achieving their potential due to stress. We also believe that with education and awareness, people can actually harness the stress response, increasing resilience and performance across the board. This will not only improve mental health, but it will also help businesses and the NHS save money.
