About Structural Color Gallery
Structural Color Gallery is a Brooklyn-based gallery devoted to elevating previously overlooked artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. Formed outside the hierarchies of the traditional art world, Structural Color showcases art that inspires and ignites the imagination through the exploration of experimental forms. Unlike human-made forms of pigmentation, the natural phenomenon of structural color–from which the gallery takes its name–creates vibrant hues through the microscopic scattering of light. Its effects can be seen across nature, as when light shines on the brown feathers of a peacock to reveal a dazzling array of blues and greens. Similarly, Structural Color Gallery seeks to shine a light on the historical, political, and social context of forgotten art to evoke an array of visual and emotional reflections. Structural Color Gallery is the brainchild of an unconventional partnership between Matthew Andress and Jelena Petrovic. A private dealer for nearly two decades, Matthew has worked with some of the world's most prestigious museums, galleries, and private collectors. Driven by a lifelong passion for both art and history, he focuses on locating lost historical paintings and bringing them back to market. Born and raised in Serbia, Jelena came to the United States as a law student. She has complemented a decade-long legal career with travels to the Amazon rainforest and African savannas in pursuit of artistic inspiration and adventure. Inspired by the world's vibrant natural beauty and diverse visual cultures, Jelena seeks to create encounters with complexity and mystery through art. Combining their passions and areas of expertise, Matthew and Jelena envision Structural Color Gallery as a space for exploration and experimentation.
