About STRUT Dance
Established in 2002, STRUT Dance (STRUT) is Western Australia’s celebrated choreographic centre in Boorloo (Perth) – nationally relevant and globally connected. We are a member-based organisation that exists to develop and sustain the careers of independent dance artists and support their choreographic practice to thrive. STRUT champions diverse voices, experimental practice and cross artform collaboration and in doing so develops new audiences and new understanding of what contemporary dance can be and who it is for. Our work is recognised by local, state and federal governments; we have been a member of the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries Arts Organisations Investment Program portfolio since its inception, supported continually by City of Perth since 2011 and in 2024, we achieved our long-term strategic goal and were awarded four-year funding from Creative Australia 2025 - 2028. We are deeply committed to supporting artists to make work that is presented on high profile platforms and creating experiences in surprising and unexpected places. We build pathways for dynamic artist exchange locally, nationally and globally and are passionate about supporting a connected dance community and nurturing its wellbeing. We do this through creative and skills development programs, presentation and sector advocacy. The appointment of James O’Hara and Sofie Burgoyne to the leadership of STRUT in 2022 is widely celebrated. As Co-Directors they bring a breadth of vision reflecting their respective careers working with the most celebrated dance artists of our time, as well as their choreographic research, performances in in regional Australia , site specific and festival curation.
