About Students Against Unjust Imprisonment

In recent years, there has been a strong focus across the world on initial interactions with police and widespread police brutality, but what happens to the arrests or cases that go under the radar? Students Against Unjust Imprisonment aims to educate our community and draw attention to the injustices occurring within our criminal justice system that may have been ignored or overlooked. Through communication, research, and connections, students will work to aid in the advocacy of some of these cases. By maintaining specific focuses across the school year and working to discover the "Why?" and the "Now what?", we hope to evoke a desire for action, change, and awareness across the Boulder community. Often, the first impression of an unjust imprisonment is that it has been caused by a single event; however, by looking into additional factors like poverty or over-policing, we can grow our understanding to why this occurs and work together to start ground-up action. In consistently questioning and researching types of prison systems, re-offense rates, and other aspects of the criminal justice system, we will gain the ability to identify systemic issues and add to our knowledge on the entirety of the criminal justice system. This organization not only provides insight to the community, but it offers a way for students to dissect and interact with a crucial piece of our society.
