About StudentsFirst
StudentsFirst is a national movement founded by former Washington, DC Chancellor Michelle Rhee to transform our public education system. America's schools are failing our kids. While some people blame the kids, or simply want to throw more money at the problem, we know that real change requires a better system -- one that puts students' needs before those of special interests or wasteful bureaucracies. Not only is reform crucial to the future of our children, it is crucial to our economy. Of 30 the industrialized countries regularly surveyed, U.S. schools rank near the bottom and are not getting better. This translates into an economic loss of over $2 trillion per year and puts the U.S. at risk for not being able to compete in our global economy. StudentsFirst has created a gold-standard, research-based policy agenda that can serve as a roadmap for state education reform plans. To drive lasting reform, we're working with parents, teachers, administrators, and citizens across the country to demand that public officials create policies that: elevate the teaching profession by recognizing and rewarding a teacher’s impact on student success, provide access to excellent schools regardless of a child’s zip code, and ensure effective use of public dollars and accountability-based governance structures.
