About Studio Ruba
Studio Ruba is an Amsterdam based boutique production company founded in 2019 by producers Maarten van der Ven and Layla Meijman. With a deep faith in the power of collaboration, they focus on developing and producing cinematographic films, creative documentaries and high-end series with a select group of filmmakers. Their goal is to move, excite and broaden audiences' perspectives with innovative stories. In 2023, their coming-of-age road film KIDDO by Zara Dwinger had its world premiere at the 73rd edition of the Berlinale, was nominated six times at the Dutch Academy Awards including for Best Film, and picked up two awards (Best Sound Design, Best Montage). The film had a theatrical release in NL, Belgium and France and traveled to 35+ festivals, amongst which Cannes Ecrans Junior. Dwight Fagbamila's feature film FEMI (2022) premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival in 2022 and was nominated for a Dutch Academy Award for best actor. Internationally, the film had its world premiere at Warsaw IFF. This year their first minority co-production TO A LAND UNKNOWN by Mahdi Fleifel, will have it’s world premiere at the Directors Fortnight in Cannes. Coming up projects are THE IDYLL by Aaron Rookus which is in post production, a co-production between Flanders (Polar Bear) and Estonia (Allfilm) and came about with support from the Netherlands Film Fund, Netherlands Production Incentive, BNNVARA, CoBO Fund, Creative Europe Media, Estonian Film Institute, Flemish Audiovisual Fund and Belgium tax shelter. SUGAR by Amira Duynhouwer just received a production grant and will be shot later this year. Prior to the founding of Ruba, Layla and Maarten gained years of experience producing - and sometimes line producing - award winning feature films, shorts and documentaries.
