SubArt is enhancing the riders’ experience in the Bay Area’s metro stations by promoting the infusion of large-scale art and design. Inspired by a global movement that re-imagines utilitarian transit corridors as vibrant public spaces, SubArt is working to transform San Francisco Bay Area subways to increase ridership, revitalize neighborhoods, and enrich our cultural life. Large-scale, place-making art and design can have a positive impact on our communities. In SF Bay Area, our most heavily used public space—our underground metro system—is grim and out of date. By revitalizing this space with immersive art and design, we can improve the daily experience for over ½ million people, attract new riders to our public transit system, and create an inspiring sense of place underground that will reflect the creativity above ground. SubArt works to enhance the rider experience in the Bay Area’s metro station by infusing the stations with art and design. SubArt is the catalyst of an art program at BART, engages the general public, and is building private partnerships that will allow the creation of full-scale art and design in our underground metro stations. Together, with our collective imagination, resources and creativity, we can make the Bay Area’s most densely used transit stations the most inspiring in the world, creating a sense of pride for residents and a memorable sense of place for our visitors.
