About Suicide Prevention of Yolo County
A non-profit organization with the mission of providing crisis prevention and intervention, education, and community outreach services to the residents of Yolo County. Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services of Yolo County (SPYC) was founded in 1966. Professionals in the community recognized a need for crisis response services. A small group of citizens organized a telephone crisis line funded by churches, service groups, and individual donors. Incorporation as a non-profit organization occurred in 1980 as a result of a growing need for services. Today, SPYC is among the oldest suicide prevention crisis lines in the nation and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The agency also serves teens in Yolo County through the Allied Services for Kids (ASK) crisis lines, the Davis and Woodland School Safety Lines, as well as through the “SOS Signs of Suicide®” school education and prevention program. Support groups for those who have lost a loved one to suicide are also provided by the agency. Each year, SPYC provides immediate telephone support to more than 5,000 callers who are contemplating suicide or are in severe psychological distress.
