About Summer on the Hill

At Summer on the Hill, we cultivate tomorrow’s leaders by enriching the education of public school students from the Bronx, Harlem and Washington Heights. Our mission is to bridge the opportunity gap by equipping bright, motivated young people with the resources and support system to achieve their full potential. Our project-based curriculum and guidance help prepare students and their families for selective schools and success beyond. SOH is a year-round, academic enrichment program that has served promising students since 1994. SOH: • is certified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. • is housed on the campus of the Horace Mann School in Riverdale • works with the same students and families from 3rd through 12th grade - for ten years • helps promising students who are not being challenged in their schools and are at risk of losing their motivation to learn • hires experienced teachers from independent, parochial, and public schools to teach small classes using a stimulating curriculum• provides counseling and placement services to families when students apply for middle and high school, including applications to independent schools and specialized high schools • has placed students in prestigious colleges and universities, such as Amherst, Barnard, Boston College, Bowdoin, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, Middlebury, MIT, NYU, Princeton, Smith, U Penn, Wesleyan, Williams, and Yale • has a 90% attendance rate consistently, testifying to the commitment of SOH students • partners with 30-40 public schools annually to identify and recruit students • the average annual family income of SOH students is $60,000 • two-thirds of SOH students are the first in their families to be headed for college. • over 90% of SOH students identify as people of color
