About Sunderland Literacy Aid
Sunderland Literacy Aid is a 2018 founded social enterprise established for charitable purposes. There is no paid staff. SLA’s objective is focused on increasing the area’s literacy rate by giving locals the possibility to fall in love with books/reading and hopefully step up their literacy level. The power and value of being literate in a literate society is played out every day around the world. Many individuals, and even whole societies, make considerable sacrifices to become literate just as others take it for granted. Societies that do not practice literate behavior are often squalid, undernourished in mind and body, repressive of human rights and dignity, brutal and harsh. SLA is doing it for the love of literacy because literacy lifts individuals out of poverty, improves the development of the wider community, reduces infant mortality rates, empowers women and girls and positively impacts economic growth beyond the local community, among other things. In Sunderland, many disadvantaged groups and communities face particular challenges when they seek to access books and read. Official studies have shown that the North East of England shows the lowest literacy rate in the country. We want to change that by making their access to free books easier and more accessible than ever. If we manage to access some funding, we’re also wanting to run free workshops focused on literacy and arts. SLA believes that by taking coordinated action at a local level to drive up literacy levels, can support increased educational attainment and employability skills, and improve health outcomes and social capital. This should help the local community to improve their employability situation, to be better parents, spouses, and family members, as well as better citizens and to participate in the political life of the local community.
