About Sweltering Cities

Our summers are getting longer, hotter and drier. People in our cities are facing searing, sustained heat that is changing the way we work, live, study and play. As the climate changes and temperatures rise, the heat build-up in our cities is exacerbated by treeless streets, building materials and poorly planned suburbs. Sweltering Cities amplifies the voices of suburban communities experiencing the debilitating heat of increasingly longer summers, helping them organise and lobby their representatives and decision-makers to: - recognise extreme heat as a public health issue that affects how we live, learn and play today; - listen to the voices of scientists and planners on how we must adapt our cities; - implement policies and plans that mitigate heating; - change the narrative on climate change by understanding it as an public health issue that affects us all. Working at the intersection of health, economic injustice and climate change, Sweltering Cities aims to: - put the voices of people most affected by the climate crisis in our cities front and centre in media coverage of extreme heat; - expand the number and diversity of people working together to stop catastrophic climate change; - win community campaigns to create sustainable, liveable and resilient cities. Our vision is cooler, more equitable and sustainable cities, with planning and policies that put people at the centre.
