For example, T.J. Thomas Associates, Inc. completed a unique showcase Brownfield project spanning three years, Unity Junior High School. This project involved turning a century old heavy industrial site located in a densely populated urban setting into a school campus. The project has been nationally recognized with the presentation of the 2003 Phoenix Award for Community Impact. The eighteen acre site has been successfully transitioned into a 4,000 student junior high school campus, the largest in the State of Illinois. The new school main campus meets TACO Tier I residential objectives and has a “No Further Remediation” designation without any engineered controls from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency under the Site Remediation Program. A former heavy industrial site was determined to be the best alternative for the new school. The new campus provided the catalyst in revitalizing the aging and partially abandoned industrial district of the community. The project has been featured in the 2001 Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Site Remediation Program Annual Report and the January 2002 F. W. Dodge Midwest Construction magazine. STAFFING T.J.
