The kernel idea of tasting.ai is: using the power of artificial intelligence to discover what it is about a drink that you like. It is the first start-up that brings together AI with whisky tasting. Tasting.ai was developed by the founders of Beavis.bar in Berlin to help people discover their personal taste preferences in whisky. If you have ever tried to identify an aroma just by smelling, without seeing what you are smelling, most likely you cannot name the aroma. It is the way our brains are wired to our taste buds. Aromas and flavors are familiar but not easily identifiable. This is known in olfactory science as the “Naming Failure Problem” But identifying flavors is the key to understanding what it is about a whisky that is enjoyable. We figured out a way of making good aroma suggestions. We developed a huge list of potential aromas, and then figured out how to match them to vague impressions that a whiskey can inspire. All you have to do is give your impressions and our models suggest what the likely aromas might be that could have provoked that impression. These aroma suggestions become the key to getting past Naming Failure. Our company is financed by a group of whisky lovers who also know about technology, and who have seen that technology can be applied in creative ways to complicated issues of perception and enjoyment. Most of the investors have discovered the project through visits to the Beavis Bar. The group includes a former Tesla engineer who helped set up the Berlin Tesla Factory, a software entrepreneur who founded, grew, and sold a major company in the SAP security space, a former Berlin City finance chief, a Berlin-based pastry chef, a former Intel Corporation marketing executive.
