Tau Beta Pi, the oldest engineering honor society in the United States, was founded at Lehigh University in 1885. Its mission is to honor those who have distinguished themselves through exceptional scholarship, exemplary character, and notable contributions to the field of engineering. By fostering a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges, Tau Beta Pi aims to inspire innovation and leadership. Today, the society has collegiate chapters at 238 institutions and alumni chapters in 59 cities, creating a vast network of excellence and mentorship. Members of Tau Beta Pi include some of the most influential individuals in history, such as 69 astronauts, 22 Nobel Prize winners, 11 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, 48 Rhodes Scholars, and numerous leaders in government and industry. These include CEOs and presidents of major companies like GM, Chrysler, Lockheed Martin, Xerox, and Amazon.com, as well as 11 individuals recognized as Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year.” As a chapter, we are committed to empowering our academic community through collaboration, leadership, and service.
