This legendary steakhouse began in 1985 when two college friends, Mark Cumins and Jerry Scheer, founded the TBonz Restaurant Group in Athens. The two weren’t quite ready to get a “real job,” so they opened a restaurant instead. TBonz, (spelled TBones in the beginning), was the result of their efforts. Lo and behold, a few decades later, Mark and Jerry now own and operate the TBonz-Liberty Restaurant Group with locations in Georgia and the Carolinas – the Augusta location included! Over the years, they found that running a chain of restaurants spread across the southeast was not only a job, but a career! Each Tbonz has its flavor, and those who dine at Tbonz Augusta are proud of their James Brown booth. It turns out the Godfather of Soul loved Tbonz, and always came in to eat at that booth, sometimes with his whole band after rehearsals. You’ll probably hear the story of the lucky customer who was given a funky rendition of “Happy Birthday” while celebrating at the restaurant. James Brown memorabilia dots the restaurant – from art to signed T-shirts – a tribute to the musician’s ties to his Augusta hometown! In its more than 20 years in business, Tbonz is the same as the day it was founded – casual and friendly, and built on the principle that customers are number one.
