About Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects
Since 1905, Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects (NZIA) has advocated for architects and architecture in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Institute represents more than 90 percent of the country's registered architects and hundreds of architectural graduates and students. The Institute has eight branches throughout the country. Branch activities are organised by an elected Council, headed by a President serving a two-year term, and are supported by the national office. Since its establishment, the Institute has produced material essential to architects' work, run programmes to educate members and industry professionals, and promoted high standards of building design and performance. It fosters a culture of collegiality and civic mindedness among its members and supports initiatives that improve the functionality and wellbeing of our communities and built environment. Awards: The Institute's rigourous, peer-reviewed Awards programme sets the benchmark for New Zealand architecture. This includes the Local Architecture Awards and the New Zealand Architecture Awards (sponsored by Resene and APL), the Gold Medal Award, F. Gordon Wilson Fellowship for Public Housing, The Warren Trust Awards for Architectural Writing, John Sutherland Practice Award and the Named Awards. CPD: Seminars, presentations, workshops and other events enable architects to continually upgrade their skills and maintain registration. Te Kawenata o Rata: A treaty of partnership with Ngā Aho, the organisation of Māori design practitioners, enables future joint strategies and action plans to be developed. in:situ: The biennial conference sees the world's leading architects share their knowledge in Aotearoa New Zealand. Friends of Architecture: A free programme for members of the public interested in learning more about architecture and architects. The Diversity Agenda: A partnership with Engineering New Zealand and ACENZ that aims to make engineering and architecture firms more equitable.
