Throughout history, artists have led the way in creating change and resisting oppression. As the world continues to grapple with social, political, and economic unrest, our creative community remains as essential as ever in showing solidarity and resilience. Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa translates to "New Zealand Āhua Week," with āhua meaning form and shape—synonymous with fashion. As the political landscape continues to shift, especially with ongoing attempts to erase Māori language and culture, we stand firm in using the name that honors the history of the land and celebrates the diversity of Aotearoa. Āhua was born from continued cancellations of the overseas-owned New Zealand Fashion Week and declining interests from designers in a show that did not represent them. Āhua took the opportunity to create something accessible to all audiences, produced in a manner that emphasized the art of design, rather than the commercialization of it. In September 2024 and March 2025, Āhua successfully provided a platform for emerging couture and multi-disciplinary artists across Aotearoa. In August 2025, Āhua is coming back with the same passion and elevation to designers and connoisseurs of fashion in Aotearoa.
