About Texas Health and Science University
THSU offers an oriental medicine program that prepares its graduates for NCCAOM certification and licensing by the state of Texas. Unlike many other schools of traditional Chinese medicine, the curriculum at THSU places great emphasis on the study of classical oriental medicine providing a holistic approach to treatment. At THSU, students come to understand and appreciate how acupuncture is equally as important in treatment as herbology, and that working with herbs in conjunction with acupuncture significantly broadens the scope and efficacy of treatment. The THSU school year consists of three 15-week trimesters that are divided into spring, summer and fall classes. While the majority of the university's students are full-time, many are employed or have family or other obligations that require much of their time. Therefore, students have the opportunity to enroll in day or night/weekend classes. THSU was established in 1990. Our goal is not just to be another school of acupuncture but rather to emphasize the traditional and classical understanding of Chinese medicine. THSU is heralded as one of a few acupuncture programs to teach from the classics such as the Shang Han Lun, Golden Chamber, and Four Streams of Scholars which gives students a solid foundation in classical traditional Chinese medicine. With this foundation, our graduates provide patients with a comprehensive treatment program that integrates their knowledge of acupuncture, herbology, qigong and tuina. Our accreditations include: Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) and Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).
