About The 116Th Infantry Regiment Foundation Inc
The 116th Infantry Regiment Foundation, Inc. is committed to educating as many people as we can about our Citizen Soldiers and their stories of the History they made, the Heritage they established in their communities and units, and the Legacy of service and contribution they left from which we all benefit and should emulate. Founded in 1994, the 116th Foundation has grown from the commitment of the three founders to a core of over 20 dedicated volunteers and is governed by the 10 members of the Board of Directors. We moved from a small storage space in the Staunton National Guard armory to a stand-alone facility for the museum and archives in Verona, VA. The staff consist of an Executive Director, and a part-time education consultant/Curator. The 116th Foundation realizes its vision with a mission of three programs. We provide the only military history museum in the Shenandoah Valley region encompassing all eras of American military activity while focusing solely on the stories of the Citizen Soldier. We conduct education programs by hosting and leading history tours to Battlefields and historic sites across France. We are partnered with James Madison and Radford Universities to offer for-credit internships to college students. Our volunteers present lectures and exhibits at State sponsored teacher workshops each year and we plan to host one local workshop each year. These highlight the teacher and home-school resources we have and how our history can be used to fulfill nearly all of Virginia Standards of Learning in social studies. We also travel to or host community groups tell the story of selfless service thru the history of our citizen soldiers. Finally, we support our Veterans and their families by hosting an annual reunion conference and banquet for the veterans, current members of the regiment, families and descendants, and their guests.
