About The Aberdeen Law Project
Founded by then student Ryan Whelan, The Aberdeen Law Project was the first student-led law clinic in Scotland. The idea for The Project came from the fact that students can be a valuable resource when bridging the gap in access to justice present in the North East of Scotland. This is why The Aberdeen Law Project's company name is 'Casus Omissus', which literally means gap in the law. In 2009, Whelan's final year at the University of Aberdeen, The Aberdeen Law Project was founded by a group of law students who were supported by Margaret Ross, Roderick Paisley and Greg Gordon (law professors at the University of Aberdeen). We are a student run and led law clinic and community outreach initiative that operates in partnership with the University of Aberdeen. Our Faculty Director, Mr. Malcolm Combe, and the Advisory Committee assist the students in identifying and pursuing The Project's objectives and oversee their work. In its first year The Aberdeen Law Project assisted 30 clients. As of the beginning of 2015, over 200 clients have been helped by The Project. The aims of The Project are threefold; - to secure access to justice for the economically deprived; - to provide students with practical experience under the supervision of practitioners; - and to increase opportunity by undertaking educational outreach projects. As the name Casus Omissus suggests, the clinic can only provide assistance where there is no other recourse available.
