About The Academy Project (TAP)

The Academy Project (TAP) is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2015 on the principle that maintaining education as a point of stability can significantly improve the success of foster youth, providing them with the opportunity to build strong relationships with peers and caring adults. We were established in response to the following challenges faced by foster youth in Los Angeles: - Only 58% of foster youth achieve a high school diploma, compared to 84% of the general population. - A mere 1.8% of foster youth complete a bachelor's degree, compared to 34% of the general population. - 75% of foster youth perform below grade level, and 83% are held back. - 70% of California prison inmates have spent time in foster care. - Within the first 2 to 4 years after aging out of the foster care system, 61% of foster youth are unemployed, 40% rely on public assistance, 25% become homeless, and 20% are incarcerated. We believe that these outcomes are not inevitable. Our vision is for a community where foster youth have the necessary support, resources, skills, and understanding to develop into thriving, independent, resilient, and successful adults. By coming together, offering open-handed empowerment and providing supportive education, we can help bring positive change.
